Cathleen Calkins is a freelance writer and photographer with a penchant for adventure, health, fitness and travel. Her words have appeared in a wide range of media including regional, national and international publications, brochures, print advertising, corporate sales kits, press materials, web content and radio scripts. Her images have been featured in regional publications and national advertising collateral.
She has owned and managed a full service creative agency where she gained experience in media relations, advertising and project management – from publication design and layout to print.
Cathleen began her career in the travel and tourism industry where she excelled in management – during this tenure she wrote numerous training and service manuals and developed marketing collateral and campaigns. From there she turned to technical writing and honed her skills at drafting concise copy. Along the way she developed her eye and learned to communicate through her images. Most recently, she was awarded an honorable mention by WIPI (Women in Photography International) in its ‘Beauty: Camera Eye of the Beholder’ contest – Lifestyle Category. She also attended The Banff Centre’s October 2006 National Geographic Adventure Workshop with Bill Hatcher and Gordon Wiltsie.
Cathleen graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in Institutional Management and a minor in Nutrition. She continues to expand her course work through UCLA and www.mediabistro.com. In her spare time, she teaches spinning, yoga and skiing.
Cathleen resides in Big Bear Lake, California with her partner Scott, their dog McGyver and a pride of cats – Witters, Buster, Kitty and Ivan.
